The name "Chilliwack" is derived from the First Nation people whose communities form the western edge of the city. A fairly accurate translation is “going back upstream”, which refers to their ancient homeland upstream on the Chilliwack River. Chilliwack is famous for its sweet corn and other agricultural products, there are some interesting farm tours in the area, and local lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing and water sports. Golf courses and bike trails offer challenges for all skill levels.
Chilliwack is located on the Fraser River in a tree-filled valley overlooked by the Cascade Mountain Range. Just 100 km (62 miles) east of Vancouver, Chilliwack is perfectly situated to offer many different opportunities that range from peaceful mountain hikes to heart-stopping white-water rafting. Para-gliders from around the world fly Chilliwack sites that challenge the best in the world. Skilled mountaineers can view the valley from jagged mountain peaks 2000 m (6562 ft) high. Impressive sights from land include nearby Cultus Lake and Bridal Veil Falls. With more than 200 species of birds visiting Chilliwack, the Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park and the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve are must sees for birdwatchers. Chilliwack's rapids have Canada's national white-water kayaking team visiting regularly for training.
